Utility rates in Palo Alto are projected to rise by 9% next summer, adding $36.40 to the median residential bill of about $402 this year.
Increases in rates vary across utilities, with significant hikes next year projected for water (18%) and wastewater (14%), leading to an additional $26.30 on bills.
The increases aim to address higher maintenance costs and necessary repairs to distribution systems, as well as to cope with inflation and declining water sales.
The projected hikes are part of an ongoing trend, with staff warning that further increases between 7% and 9% are expected in each year beyond 2025.
