For the first time in over 25 years, otters have been sighted at Rainham Marshes nature reserve, showcasing the positive impact of conservation efforts. Initially thought to be a fleeting visit, trail cameras soon captured multiple sightings, suggesting that the otters may have settled in the area. Karen Fiske, RSPB visitor experience manager, expressed excitement about the sightings and hopes for the otters to become permanent residents. The return of this protected species highlights the ongoing revival of wildlife in England after historical declines due to pollution and hunting.
This is the first evidence of otters residing at Rainham Marshes since the RSPB took over the site.
It's really exciting to see otters on the reserve and we are extremely hopeful that they decide to use the reserve as a permanent home.
