Otaru International Information Center / waiwai
Briefly

The Otaru International Information Center is designed as a pivotal landmark in Otaru's harbor area, where it seeks to revitalize the historical significance of the port, once central to Japan’s herring fishing industry.
The arrangement of pillars at a 45-degree angle not only supports the structure but symbolically points towards the future harbor, creating a dynamic visual connection with the surrounding environment.
With a rooftop deck intended as a communal space, the design encourages the public to engage with the harbor again, fostering a sense of community and revitalization in the area.
Architectural firm waiwai, led by Kazuma Yamao and partners, emphasizes a harmonious blend of function and aesthetic in the Information Center, aiming to to reconnect Otaru’s residents with their maritime heritage.
