OpenAI rejects $97.4bn Musk bid and says company is not for sale
Briefly

OpenAI has firmly rejected Elon Musk's $97.4 billion bid to acquire the company, asserting its commitment to remain a nonprofit organization. The board's unanimous decision comes as part of a larger effort to maintain control over its direction and prioritize its mission to ensure artificial general intelligence (AGI) benefits all of humanity. Musk's consortium indicated they would withdraw their offer if OpenAI abandoned plans to become for-profit, a structural pivot that has been a point of contention since Musk's exit from the organization in 2019.
"OpenAI is not for sale, and the board has unanimously rejected Mr. Musk's latest attempt to disrupt his competition," said the company in a statement.
"Any potential reorganization of OpenAI will strengthen our nonprofit and its mission to ensure AGI benefits all of humanity," stated Bret Taylor, chair of OpenAI's board.
Elon Musk's consortium will withdraw its bid for OpenAI's non-profit arm if it abandons plans to become a for-profit entity, according to a court filing.
Altman dismissed Musk's offer with a simple no thank you, inciting Musk to retaliate with an accusation of being a swindler.
