Margret Chola, an octogenarian from rural Zambia, gained viral fame as a fashion icon when she collaborated with her granddaughter, Diana Kaumba. It began after Kaumba posted striking photos of Chola dressed in bold, contemporary outfits on Instagram, quickly accumulating thousands of likes and comments. Chola, affectionately called Mbuya, has since amassed over 140,000 Instagram followers, including notable celebrities. This project has transformed their lives, sparking both local and international media attention, resulting in magazine features and merchandise, despite initial skepticism from their community in Zambia.
There was something about that image that made me post it, says Kaumba. I love it, but I was so scared that people would judge me because I had put so many chains on my grandma.
Chola's image has featured on the cover of magazines, on the BBC and in other media outlets, is printed on T-shirts, and Kaumba has appeared on TV talkshows.
