The 2-year-old sea lion found shot on Bolsa Chica State Beach died from its injuries, highlighting ongoing illegal shootings of marine mammals in California.
NOAA spokesperson reported that the illegal shooting of sea lions is an unfortunate regular occurrence, with roughly 20 fatalities each year in California.
Michael Milstein emphasized that, despite the sea lion population rebounding since 1975, illegal acts like shooting them continue to pose significant threats.
"California sea lions are a conservation success because the population has rebounded from the days when they were shot for bounties," Milstein stated.
