New York City has implemented a congestion pricing program charging vehicles entering Manhattan below 60th Street to alleviate traffic congestion and improve air quality. However, community advocates in the South Bronx warn that this initiative might exacerbate traffic and pollution in their historically disadvantaged neighborhood. Despite the expected benefits of reduced congestion and increased revenue for public transport, concerns arise regarding its potential to divert more vehicles into already overburdened areas, worsening health issues such as asthma among local residents, predominantly made up of Hispanic and Black communities.
We are inundated with traffic," said Mychal Johnson, co-founder of South Bronx Unite, a community advocacy group that was part of the environmental justice advisory group for the congestion pricing program.
While the tolls are expected to speed commutes and help improve air quality in the region, they are also projected to worsen traffic and pollution in a handful of neighborhoods, including the South Bronx.
