Over 300 tenants and housing advocates rallied outside City Hall against Intro 1107, a bill backed by Airbnb that could compromise rental units in NYC. The grassroots organization Tenants Not Tourists, alongside numerous council members, expressed their opposition through a letter from 43 tenant rights organizations. Concerns were raised that the bill could escalate the housing crisis by enabling landlords to remove rental units from the market. Critics argue it could create loopholes, inflate rental prices, and weaken current protections established by Local Law 18 of 2021, aimed at regulating short-term rentals.
The City Council has promised to address our historic housing crisis and provide stable, affordable homes, but it cannot do that by passing legislation that would pull the rug out from under tenants.
Rolling back the strongest Airbnb protections in the country will not solve the affordable housing crisis that is already affecting thousands of New Yorkers.
