This project will invest in the mobility enhancements necessary to transform existing surface parking lots around this North Berkeley BART station into a vibrant, high-density, mixed-use development, Omishakin said as afternoon commuters filed out of the station.
Transportation officials announced Thursday that BART has been awarded a $25 million grant for a suite of infrastructure upgrades meant to make it easier to access the North Berkeley station once the project's planned 739 apartments are built and most of its rider parking is removed.
Berkeley leaders joined regional and state transportation officials for a news conference at the station Thursday to celebrate the grant, which was one of several doled out to infrastructure projects around California.
A development team dubbed North Berkeley Housing Partners submitted plans in February that call for building 13 new structures at the eight-acre station site, knitted together by 50,000 square feet of amenity-filled outdoor space.
