The National Weather Service has issued a Freeze Watch for much of the Bay Area as temperatures are set to plummet, with significant risks posed to the unhoused community. Outreach teams like the SAFE team from Petaluma People's Services Center are proactively checking on individuals experiencing homelessness to ensure their safety and well-being during the cold snap. Local experts also provide tips on protecting plants from frost, emphasizing the need for hydration during freezing weather.
Barrera said, 'They have been nothing but wonderful people. Gave me a lot of support and water, food, snacks, 'need a jacket?' It's more than I deserve.'
Hempel said, 'Yes, there's a high level of concern, especially on days like this when most of us are enjoying the sun. We know it's going to get cold, so the SAFE team is strategically doing work to individuals they can find.'
Hempel noted, 'People don't realize when it's really cold, you get dehydrated and water is important.'
Marsland advised, 'Any potted plants you have, you may want to bring them close to the house near a warmer structure.'
