Sudden service cuts by Southeastern in 2022 led to the cancellation of Sunday trains between Blackheath and Charlton. As stated in a recent Greenwood Council meeting, Southeastern cited inadequate revenue generation to justify reinstituting the service without extra funding from the Department for Transport. Network Rail also discussed ongoing repairs to a rail tunnel requiring future closures and mentioned plans for bridge refurbishment at Maze Hill station by 2029. They expressed interest in discussions about Charlton station's redevelopment with Greenwich Council.
Southeastern stated that there is no funding available to reinstate Sunday services between Charlton and Lewisham, despite prior exploration of a business case.
Network Rail warned of planned repairs on the rail tunnel that will require further closures, expected to begin in mid-May and last for over two months.
Network Rail has not yet held discussions with Greenwich Council about redeveloping Charlton station but welcomes engagement on this issue.
The refurbishment of the bridge at Maze Hill station is planned before the end of 2029, with a timeline for the works yet to be set.
