An EU directive will come into force next June. The directive will remove one of the trickiest job interview questions: asking candidates their pay expectations. Candidates who state a salary that is too high risk being priced out of consideration. Candidates who state a salary that is too low risk signaling low self-worth to interviewers. Ireland has not yet determined exactly how to transpose the directive into national law. The legal uncertainty leaves both employers and applicants unclear about future interview practices and compliance requirements.
