Construction of new bus lanes on Hillside Avenue in Queens has begun to improve public transit service for 22 bus routes by reducing wait times. The project will introduce nearly eight miles of dedicated bus lanes, allowing buses to bypass congestion caused by cars and trucks. An estimated 215,000 riders will benefit from these improvements. Transportation officials highlight the importance of the project, noting that if considered a single system, the bus routes would rank 18th largest in the United States by ridership. Much of the current road space is underutilized for buses.
Hillside Avenue is one of the most important commuting corridors of Queens, but currently features an inconsistent, patchwork design with some stretches of the street offering frequently blocked curbside bus lanes and other sections without any bus lanes at all.
Officials estimated that about 215,000 riders will benefit from the nearly eight miles of new bus lanes, with significant improvements in wait times and bus service for 22 routes.
The project is particularly important because of the sheer number of riders on the route. If the buses along Hillside Avenue were a single transit system, it would be the 18th largest such system by ridership in the United States.
Transportation officials stated that 60% of the residents near Hillside Avenue rely on public transit, and 83% of those ride the buses.
