Dax Pierson significantly impacted the Bay Area music scene, particularly in experimental hip-hop, through his projects Subtle and 13 & God. His innovative sound opened doors for numerous East Bay artists. After a debilitating 2005 car accident left him quadriplegic, he remarkably adapted and continued to produce unique electronic music using technology. Pierson passed away on December 30 at the age of 54 after battling sepsis. He was remembered for his lifelong passion for music, profound knowledge, and the supportive community he cultivated alongside friends in the industry.
'Dax was an encyclopedia of musical knowledge,' recalls Tracy Curry, who noted that his work as a store buyer at Amoeba Music allowed him significant influence over local music.
'He could play music just by ear,' recalls his stepsister Jala Anderson Moore, highlighting his innate talent from a young age and passion for performance.
