According to the survey by the Verian research institute, less than one in five young people in Germany believe they can effect change through political engagement. This sense of powerlessness is largely driven by distrust in political structures, with 38% expressing distrust and 40% feeling that social conditions are unchangeable. Only 8% feel that political parties genuinely consider their concerns, indicating a significant disconnect between young people and the political establishment.
The Bertelsmann Foundation's report points out that despite the overwhelming disenchantment with political parties, a notable 61% of young people surveyed still believe that democracy is the optimal form of governance. This suggests that their lack of political engagement does not stem from an outright rejection of democracy itself, but rather a perceived inadequacy in how current democratic processes address their needs and concerns.
