HSE chief executive Bernard Gloster emphasized that measures are being taken to prepare for a potential surge in hospitalisations and ICU admissions due to the flu.
Mr Gloster highlighted that the healthcare system is currently managing intensive care capacity with 323 available beds, though the flu crisis adds extra pressure to the entire system.
He mentioned a remarkable increase in emergency department attendance, noting that 34,400 people visited compared to 6,600 last year, signaling a significant uptick in demand.
The HSE is focusing on maintaining patient-flow and improving community services, asking the public to cooperate with staff and adhere to infection prevention guidelines.
