Massive sinkhole on Interstate 80 in New Jersey has caused lane closures and significant backups, with motorists urged to seek alternate routes while crews assess the situation.
The sinkhole, large enough to swallow several cars, opened on the shoulder of Interstate 80 around 7:45 a.m., prompting immediate closures of eastbound lanes and detours for drivers.
Authorities have reported no injuries, and while workers begin repairs, the Department of Transportation has encouraged drivers stuck in traffic to reroute through nearby Route 15.
Due to the holiday period, traffic on the highway is lighter than usual, which may help alleviate congestion during the repair process of the expansive sinkhole.
