Modernist architect's house in NW D.C. on the market for $4.5 million
Briefly

The mid-century modern house in D.C., designed by Arthur S. Keyes Jr. post-WWII, recently underwent significant renovations by new owners Jill and Rock Tonkel after having been available for rent. Initially purchased for $1.6 million, the property was affected by a fire in 2020, leading to water and smoke damage. The Tonkels transformed the space in early 2022, enhancing it with custom cabinetry and open floor plans, now priced at $4.5 million on the market. Keyes's architectural firm was instrumental in modernist buildings in D.C.
According to Tonkel, the damage from the fire didn't necessitate the renovations done to the house, which were completed in early 2022.
After serving as a naval officer in the Second World War, Arthur S. Keyes Jr. designed this house for his family in the late 1940s.
The people who owned Keyes's house after his death made it available to rent until a 2020 fire at a neighboring house caused water and smoke damage.
They sold the property to Jill Tonkel and her husband, Rock, for $1.6 million. After renovations, 2605 31st St. NW is back on the market for $4.5 million.
