Modern classical music can be a big turn-off', admits composer Mark-Anthony Turnage
Briefly

Mark-Anthony Turnage openly acknowledges that many view modern classical music as unapproachable, lamenting the infrequency of contemporary works being performed despite his own efforts. "It's sad that contemporary music is seen as a turn-off. People feel trapped in such experiences, leading to a disconnect between the audience and the art." He fears that unless there is change, this divide between innovative compositions and listener engagement will only continue to grow.
Reflecting on his experiences, Turnage recalls a moment in the restroom where an audience member openly criticized his work. "As I was at the urinal, a man turned to his friend and said, 'What twisted person would write this sort of rubbish?' I wanted to say it's me, but I just skulked out. It was a humbling reminder of how polarizing modern compositions can be for audiences."
