After going missing for two days during a gold panning expedition, the amateur panner was successfully rescued by a joint team from Butte County Search and Rescue and Cal Fire. The companion became tired and stayed put while the panner went for water, leading to their separation. A helicopter eventually spotted a campfire that guided rescuers through thick vegetation to the hiker, who was found in good health.
The Butte County sheriff's office emphasized that despite the dangers of dehydration and starvation in the wilderness, hypothermia can be lethal within hours. Fortunately, the panner had prepared for such an emergency, bringing along tarps and having the means to start a fire. This preparedness likely played a significant role in his survival during the harsh conditions.
