Mike Ratledge, founding member and keyboardist of the band Soft Machine, died on February 5 at age 81 after a brief illness. Known for his unique and innovative contributions to psychedelic prog-rock, his keyboard solos were integral to the band's sound. Echoing the sentiment of his former bandmate John Etheridge, Ratledge was remembered as a talented and cultured individual who significantly influenced the music scene. Soft Machine emerged in the 1960s, earning acclaim for their jazz-infused sound, often sharing stages with legends like Pink Floyd and Jimi Hendrix.
Mike was the backbone of Soft Machine in the early years and a man with an absolutely incisive mind - a marvellous composer and keyboardist.
Ratledge was also arguably the band's most recognizable figure, rocking a thick mustache, flowing mane, and darkened glasses.
