Meta Is Shutting Off Political Ads in Europe This Week
"Earlier this summer, we shared that Meta will no longer allow social issue, electoral or political ads in the European Union in response to the EU's Transparency and Targeting of Political Advertising regulation. Unfortunately, the TTPA introduces significant obligations to our processes and systems that create an untenable level of complexity and legal uncertainty for advertisers and platforms operating in the EU, so we had to make this difficult decision."
"We will continue to provide our industry-leading verification and transparency tools globally."
Meta will no longer allow social issue, electoral, or political ads in the European Union. The company cites the EU's Transparency and Targeting of Political Advertising (TTPA) regulation as imposing significant obligations on processes and systems. Meta describes those obligations as creating an untenable level of complexity and legal uncertainty for advertisers and platforms operating in the EU. As a result, the company ceased accepting such ads rather than implementing the new requirements. Meta will continue to provide its verification and transparency tools globally. Advertisers targeting EU audiences must adjust strategies and compliance plans accordingly.
