Researcher Arjun Ramani noted that states with the longest commute times, like New York and Boston, also have some of the most expensive cities, leading people to move to cheaper suburbs.
Ramani pointed out that the overlap with remote working allows people in cities with long commutes to manage traveling significant distances since they only attend the office a few times a week.
In areas with shorter commute times like North and South Dakota, real estate is more affordable, making it easier for workers to live close to their jobs.
Ramani's research indicates that households are moving away from city centers to the suburbs, resulting in longer commutes but less frequent trips to the office.
