DAMAC, a Dubai-based developer, has launched an ultra-luxury condo project, The Delmore, on the site of the 2021 Surfside building collapse that killed 98 individuals. The project features expensive residences and amenities but has drawn backlash for ignoring the tragedy in its marketing. Survivors and officials have expressed concerns that construction should wait for the federal investigation into the collapse to conclude and emphasize the need for a memorial to honor the victims. The project is set for completion in 2029, but the community is urging sensitivity in its promotion.
The focus must be on completing the investigation before allowing another development to proceed, while also ensuring a memorial is included to honor those we lost.
The challenge for the developer is to be honest and blend their efforts to do whatever they have to do with a deep respect for the history of that site.
