Australia recently enacted strict laws to combat hate crimes, including mandatory prison sentences for terror offences and the display of hate symbols. The legislation was introduced in response to an increase in antisemitic acts, following recent violent incidents and a significant spike in hate crimes after the Hamas attack on Israel in October 2023. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese emphasized the need for accountability in antisemitic activities, ensuring that offenders face compulsory prison sentences ranging from one to six years, aiming to create a safer environment.
"We want people who are engaged in antisemitic activities to be caught, to be charged and to be put in the clink," Prime Minister Anthony Albanese told reporters on Thursday.
The new laws mean that jail time is mandatory for hate crimes, with less severe offences like a Nazi salute incurring at least a year in prison.
