Man City win huge legal battle against Premier League
Briefly

An independent tribunal has ruled the Premier League’s previous Associated Party Transaction (APT) rules void, favoring Manchester City in a significant legal dispute. Introduced in 2021 to mitigate inflated sponsorships, these rules required fair market assessments for related agreements. City, having faced restrictions on a sponsorship deal with Etihad Airways, challenged the regulations in June 2024. Although the Premier League promptly ratified new, slightly altered APT rules with majority support, the ruling has now invalidated earlier regulations, leading to a new tribunal assessing the amended rules and their implications for club operations.
The tribunal deemed three elements of the first draft of APT rules to be unlawful, which could significantly impact how clubs manage sponsorship agreements.
The previous APT rules are no longer in place, paving the way for Manchester City to challenge new amendments which are being evaluated by a tribunal.
Premier League chief executive Richard Masters is currently involved in multiple legal battles with Manchester City over the enforceability of the APT rules.
The Premier League passed new, slightly amended rules with a vote of 16-4, emphasizing the swift continuity of regulations despite the tribunal's latest decision.
