The alleged rape and sexual assault of a Virgin Australia crew member in Fiji has raised concerns over safety in a region heavily reliant on tourism.
Deputy Prime Minister Viliame R Gavoka expressed condolences for the victims, stating, 'Our thoughts and concerns are with [the alleged victims] and for their health and wellbeing.'
Hosanna Kabakoro, founder of the South Pacific Foundation, noted, 'The general feeling here in Fiji is that everyone feels so bad for the [alleged] victims,' highlighting the community's empathy.
Tourism contributes around 40% to Fiji's GDP, placing a significant importance on maintaining safety and a positive image for the industry.
