Vaidotas Gedvilas, 53, a Lithuanian national from Ashefield, Mullingar, Co Westmeath, carried out a three-stage attack on his wife. He attempted to smother her while she slept using a cushion. He then doused her with barbecue fuel and set her on fire, and also choked her. The assault occurred after a house party the previous night. The following morning he behaved as if nothing had happened. Gedvilas has been sentenced to five years in prison for the attack.
