MacArthur High School in Long Island boasts a pioneering all-girls wrestling team, a rarity in high school sports within Nassau County. Comprising 17 members, the team trains rigorously, engaging in various drills and conditioning activities. Under the guidance of coaches Nick Rausenberger and Travis Cooksey, captain Gabbi Schechtman emphasizes the progressive shift in perception regarding women's wrestling. Despite only a few all-girls teams existing in the region, the MacArthur squad draws talent from multiple schools. The passion for wrestling is strong among diverse girls, highlighting the sport's increasing popularity and acceptance.
"I think girls wrestling is being seen in a new light. I think that women's wrestling is growing around the country, especially on Long Island. And now that there's developed girls teams, I think the stigma around women's wrestling is really decreasing."
"It's part of my life now and I love it so much," said junior Justine Zheng, who attends Seaford High School.
