The Bay Area Toll Authority voted to gradually raise bridge tolls by 50 cents a year until they reach $10.50 by 2030, responding to the growing maintenance costs. The Board, including members from various local governments, emphasized the need to fund efforts against steel corrosion and other essential repairs, amidst significant public opposition highlighting the increased financial burden on working-class families.
With the fully implemented tolls, a commuter crossing the bridge daily could face costs of $2,990 annually without FasTrak, highlighting the fiscal challenges presented by increasing fees. The toll increase is set to start on January 1, elevating bridge tolls to $8. This measure aims to ensure safety and maintenance of crucial infrastructure while balancing input from the community.
Despite receiving 197 comments on the toll increase proposal, with 173 opposing, the Board proceeded with plans to raise the toll. Many comments conveyed concern regarding the impact on working-class families, indicating a broader issue of affordability in transportation, which local officials must navigate while addressing necessary funding for bridge maintenance and improvement projects.
