Living Jazz's MLK tribute concert will feature the music of Aretha Franklin
Briefly

Lyz Luke emphasized the importance of having a Black woman as the tribute artist, stating, "The world needs that right now, especially the United States, and the Bay Area. I thought that was so beautiful given everything Aretha went through, and her subtle and not-so-subtle ways of carving the path for female artists was something I want to have." She highlighted the cultural significance of this choice during a pivotal time, especially given the upcoming presidential inauguration.
Franklin's legacy doesn't just dwell in her music; it intertwines with her activism. Lyz Luke noted, "I knew it would be poignant, no matter which way we went, that we were picking a Black woman to be the artist we were paying tribute to," underscoring the blend of artistry and activism that Aretha Franklin embodied throughout her life.
The upcoming tribute features 16 local musicians, including Emmy-winning artist SōLauren and the Oakland Interfaith Gospel Choir Ensemble. It's a celebration that not only pays homage to Franklin’s music but also acknowledges her impact on the Civil Rights Movement, showcasing how these artists, under the musical direction of Kev Choice, will honor both Dr. King and Franklin’s legacies.
