""It's a tragic day for our city. ... Lisbon is in mourning, it is a tragic, tragic incident," Carlos Moedas, mayor of the Portuguese capital, told reporters."
""Carris said in a statement that "all maintenance protocols have been carried out", including monthly and weekly maintenance programs and daily inspections."
"Portugal's government declared a day of national mourning on Thursday."
A Gloria funicular railway car derailed in Lisbon, killing at least 15 people and injuring 18, with five gravely injured. Authorities reported that some of the dead were foreign nationals, though victims were not identified publicly. Emergency workers pulled people from the wreckage and footage showed a destroyed yellow tram-like funicular. Portugal declared a day of national mourning and the prosecutor general opened a formal investigation while police inspected the site. The Gloria line, opened in 1885, connects Restauradores Square with Bairro Alto, carries around 3 million passengers yearly, and is operated by Carris.
