On Saturday, January 25, 2025, San Diego lifeguards, alongside local surfers, executed a remarkable rescue of over 20 individuals from a capsized boat believed to be involved in smuggling. The incident occurred after a wave overturned a 25-foot cabin cruiser, prompting immediate responses from lifeguards who utilized paddle boards and boats to save those stranded in the water. Lifeguard Lt. Rick Romero noted the intense collaboration, which included breaking windows to extricate trapped victims. Among the rescued, nine required hospitalization, though no fatalities were reported nor arrests made.
In a dramatic scene in Ocean Beach on Saturday, San Diego lifeguards and surfers helped rescue more than 20 people who were in the water, on a jetty or trapped inside a suspected smuggling boat.
When the boat washed closer to shore, lifeguards were able to break windows and rescue two people trapped inside the cabin. Romero said a lifeguard performed CPR on one person who was unconscious.
