"It is the norm in many other workplaces to provide a dignified Christmas bonus to workers. The bonus is then spent on goods and services in local communities," a letter sent from the IWU to Abtran management said.
"Given the widespread nature of the Abtran workforce, this will see small local businesses benefit up and down the country."
A spokesperson for the IWU told the Irish Independent that Abtran is taking a "non-engagement" and "non-recognition" approach to the union and its concerns, and has not responded to its correspondence.
In a statement, Abtran said in recent years the company introduced gift vouchers for its 1,200-plus staff and has continued this annually as a "gesture of appreciation."
