"Unfortunately, our nation collapsed after the return to power of the Taliban, but we were ready to fight in whatever way we could," says Khalida Popal.
"The very notion of an Afghan women's football team is built on the foundations of activism. We were already fighters, who had stood up and refused to be broken."
"I was very worried for my friends because a lot of my players had spoken out against the Taliban without concealing their identities," Popal reflects on the situation after the Taliban regained power.
"I started writing on social media, seeking help... I was doing interviews to raise awareness of the plight of Afghan women who were at risk."
