In Kenya, AI workers have established the Data Labelers Association (DLA) to advocate for fair pay and improved working conditions. Comprising over 300 members within its first week, DLA highlights the systemic injustices faced by data labellers employed to train AI systems for major tech companies. Despite Kenya's emergence as an AI labor hub, workers often earn very low wages—sometimes nothing at all for extensive hours worked. DLA leaders emphasize that workers make substantial investments in education and equipment, only to receive minimal compensation in return, contributing crucial yet overlooked efforts in AI development.
The workers power all these technological advancements, but they're paid peanuts and not even recognised.
Data workers are massively underpaid - often earning just cents for tasks that take a number of hours to complete.
