"After two months of detention, I started to lose my balance. I had a very high temperature, and it was difficult to breathe because of the air in the detention centre and the amount of torture," Maydani recalled, calling conditions "unbearable for a human or even an animal." This grim portrayal highlights the severe physical and psychological trauma inflicted on political prisoners in Syria.
"I hid at home under constant terror. I could never leave the house," Maydani expressed, reflecting a pervasive fear among those who have experienced oppression. Their lived experiences underscore the incredible toll of the Syrian regime on individual freedom and security.
"When I got out of prison, I was always afraid to walk in the street so that they would arrest me, that they would take me to prison for no reason," Abdulrahman revealed, capturing the ongoing anxiety and pervasive atmosphere of fear that continues to haunt those who have sought freedom.
"I was advised to leave the country directly but wanted to finish university," Ahmad recounted, illustrating the difficult choices faced by students during the conflict and their desire for a better future despite the risks.
