Jeffrey Gibson's Venice Biennale show heads to the Broad in Los Angeles
Briefly

Jeffrey Gibson's exhibition, 'a space in which to place me,' showcased at the 2024 Venice Biennale, will be displayed at The Broad in Downtown Los Angeles from May 10 to September 28. As the first Indigenous solo artist to represent the US, Gibson's work combines vivid colors and patterns, highlighting the resilience of marginalized communities. He expresses concern over the erasure of various civil rights histories under current political pressures, aiming to educate viewers about the longstanding struggles for inclusivity throughout American history.
The idea was to highlight that the struggle for rights is rooted in a larger narrative of injustice faced by many marginalized communities throughout American history.
What's most disturbing right now is the erasure of these histories-civil rights histories, histories of antisemitism, Black American histories, slavery, Native American histories, queer histories.
Gibson hopes his exhibition will broaden its reach to include more Native Americans and engage a larger audience with its vibrant historical narratives.
While Gibson doesn't see himself as an activist, he emphasizes the importance of recognizing the ongoing struggle for rights as part of America's foundational story.
