In January, U.S. egg prices soared by 15.2%, the largest monthly increase since June 2015, with a dozen Grade A large eggs averaging $4.95. This surge is primarily attributed to a worsening bird flu crisis, which has prompted farmers to cull infected birds, causing significant supply shortages. The inflation rate rose by 3% year-over-year in January, with egg prices being a key contributor. Other areas, such as housing and energy, also experienced price hikes. Retailers, like Trader Joe's, have implemented purchase limits to prevent hoarding, as restaurants, including Waffle House, grapple with the financial strain of rising egg costs.
The continuing egg shortage caused by HPAI (bird flu) has caused a dramatic increase in egg prices. Customers and restaurants are being forced to make difficult decisions.
We hope these limits will help to ensure that as many of our customers who need eggs are able to purchase them when they visit Trader Joe's.
