Simon Waite, a private hire driver, notes that his income and work hours have drastically changed since he started in 2017. Initially, earning £1,000 required about 50 hours, but now it takes around 70 hours due to rising costs and reduced fares following a judicial ruling granting workers' rights. Waite plans to join a log-off action on Valentine's Day to demand better conditions from Uber along with other drivers. Many report that they struggle with pay and conditions after Uber reduced rates post-ruling, undermining the rights they gained.
Over the past few years, Waite, a 41-year-old in Hertfordshire, says he has to spend dramatically more time on the road to earn a living.
Drivers report that their conditions have only worsened following the [2021] ruling, since Uber responded to the forced introduction of rights by cutting its rates.
