"Speaking ahead of Ireland assuming the presidency of the Council of the European Union next year, the former Fine Gael leader warned that progress made by Ireland as a member of the EU since the depths of the recession "should not be taken for granted". "We live now at a time when we have unprecedented contact and communication worldwide. Yet we have unprecedented isolation and disillusionment in the same vein," Mr Kenny told an audience at Trinity College Dublin on Tuesday evening."
""I see an unquenchable thirst from a young generation to engage directly with political processes. "To talk about the common challenges that our humanity faces, of climate change, of space, of saving the oceans, of food, of water, of infrastructure, of forced migration because people can't live in places....challenges that are man made in most respects and have to be dealt with by each individual country and collectively and, in our case, in Europe," Mr Kenny said."
Progress made by Ireland as an EU member since the recession should not be taken for granted. Global connectivity has increased while isolation and disillusionment have also grown. A young generation displays a strong desire to engage directly with political processes. Collective action across Europe is necessary to tackle climate change, space, ocean preservation, food and water security, infrastructure, and forced migration. Political time spent engaging other politicians can turn adversaries into working partners. International relationships and friendships formed through political engagement contributed importantly to national recovery and progress since 2011.
