Cecilia Sala, a 29-year-old Italian journalist, was arrested in Iran on December 19 while reporting, allegedly as retaliation for the detention of a Swiss-Iranian businessman in Italy.
The US state department condemned her arrest, stating, 'Unfortunately, the Iranian regime continues to unjustly detain citizens of many other countries, often using them as political leverage.'
Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani confirmed Sala's good health condition during her detention, while emphasizing the government's efforts to secure her release from Iranian authorities.
US officials highlighted the crucial role of journalists, asserting that 'journalists do crucial work in informing the public, often under dangerous conditions, and must be protected.'
