Ireland braces for Storm Bert, which could prove a killer with threat of torrential rain and risk of serious flooding
Briefly

Met Éireann issued a Status Red warning for Galway and Cork, expecting torrential rain and winds gusting up to 110 km/h. They warned of severe local flooding as areas transition suddenly from snowfall to heavy rainfall.
People in areas under Status Red are strongly advised to remain indoors and avoid travel due to the potential for significant risk to life from flooding and severe weather conditions.
The potential for rainfall to hit 80mm in a few hours is alarming, considering the average monthly rainfall for December is only 123mm. This highlights how extreme the conditions can become.
With heavy rain expected to exacerbate snowmelt, West Cork and parts of Connemara are set to experience the worst impacts of Storm Bert, particularly concerning flood-prone areas.
