In response to renewed US sanctions under President Trump aimed at reducing Iran's oil exports, President Masoud Pezeshkian of Iran urged OPEC members to unify and resist American pressure. During a meeting with OPEC Secretary-General Haitham al-Ghais, Pezeshkian emphasized the significance of collective action, asserting that if OPEC stands together, the US sanctions would be ineffective. He also discussed strategies for achieving economic stability through self-reliance and regional collaboration, emphasizing that oil is not the sole solution to Iran's challenges. The context involves Trump’s tougher stance on Iranian nuclear ambitions after withdrawing from the nuclear agreement.
"I believe if OPEC members are united and work together, the US would not be able to sanction and pressure one of them," Pezeshkian said.
"They think that everything we have depends on oil, and they want to stop our oil exports, while there are many ways to neutralise their goals," he added.
"The loss of such a volume, equal to about 1.4 percent of the total world supply, would be significant for markets," highlighting the potential impact.
Trump operates a maximum pressure sanctions campaign, aiming at stopping Tehran from obtaining nuclear weapons by driving Iranian oil exports to zero.
