Investigations under way into scores of peat extraction sites at bogs as drones capture suspected illegal activities

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has launched multiple investigations into illegal peat extraction activities across various counties, revealing significant evidence of unauthorised commercial operations.

Last year alone, an estimated €39 million worth of turf was exported, raising serious concerns about environmental impact and the adherence to regulations governing peatland use.

Officials from the EPA reported that investigations are targeting numerous locations, indicating a widespread issue of illegal peat extraction that poses risks to ecosystems and biodiversity.
