A recent report by Italian environmental watchdog Legambiente revealed alarming air quality issues in various Italian cities, noting that 25 out of 98 cities monitored exceeded the legal limit for PM10 pollutants in 2024. The report emphasizes that Frosinone has surpassed pollution limits for 70 days this year, maintaining its reputation as the smog capital. Most cities with poor air quality are located in the northern Po Valley, which is consistently recognized as one of Europe's most polluted regions. Studies indicate that residents are exposed to dangerously high levels of PM2.5 particles as well.
According to Legambiente, average PM10 levels exceeded the 50-microgram limit on a total of 70 days in Frosinone, giving the Lazio city the title of Italy's smog capital for the second consecutive year.
High levels of air pollution in the Po Valley shouldn't come as a surprise. This area has consistently been ranked among the worst for air quality in Europe.
