Hundreds of Muslims protested a survey to determine if a mosque was built over a Hindu temple, leading to clashes with police and resulting in four fatalities.
Authorities closed schools and suspended internet services in Sambhal to prevent further unrest, as violent protests erupted when a survey deemed contentious was announced.
Krishna Kumar Vishnoi, a local police officer, stated that "Some miscreants in the crowd resorted to violence, forcing us to use minor force and tear gas to restore order."
Experts noted that Hindu nationalists have been emboldened under Modi's administration, especially following the controversial inauguration of a Hindu temple on a historical mosque site.
