The latest eruption was the tenth on the Reykjanes Peninsula since 2021, occurring with little warning and resulting in the evacuation of nearby homes.
Wednesday night's eruption was "significantly smaller" than the last eruption in August; it did not follow the usual pattern of increased seismic activity beforehand.
The evacuation of around 50 or 60 homes was smooth, with residents accustomed to the process and no immediate danger reported during the incident.
Gas emissions from the eruption are anticipated to drift southward and out to sea, mitigating threats to local populations from toxic gases.
