On January 20, 2023, Thairie Ritchie, a local activist in Santa Cruz, self-immolated on the Black Lives Matter mural. His actions prompted a vigil attended by hundreds in the weeks following, as friends and family sought to honor his memory and support his recovery. Ritchie, who suffered significant burn injuries, was awake and recovering in an ICU, with a six-month recovery process projected. The gathering highlighted the community's solidarity, love, and hope amidst tragedy, and the vigil featured flowers, candles, and private notes from attendees.
"He (Ritchie) means a lot to us in the community, and we're here to support him and each other during this difficult time."
