Hundreds attend annual Winter Solstice event at Newgrange

Rosemary Collier, OPW Head of Heritage Services and Capital Works Delivery, expressed her delight in welcoming the Winter Solstice lottery winners, stating, 'Visitors and viewers witnessed first-hand the unique phenomenon at Newgrange, where sunlight aligns perfectly to illuminate the ancient chamber of the passage grave. It's a magical experience that connects us to our ancestors who constructed this impressive monument over 5,000 years ago.'

The winter solstice at Newgrange not only symbolizes the shortest day and longest night of the year but also showcases an extraordinary architectural alignment. As the sun's rays pierce through the roof box and light up the chamber for a brief 17 minutes, it creates a spectacle that draws people from various parts of Ireland and even from places as far as the USA and Austria.
